The system of observing Earth passing in front of the sun was a good idea… except that that happens once ''annually'', not daily, and thus is almost completely useless for astrogation. Also, if the place you're flying to is off the ecliptic by even a tiny angle, you wouldn't see the Earth pass in front at all.
