The Mission Control Commander is the chief Flight Director, and all Flight Directors defer to the Mission Control Commander. For Mission Daedalus a the position "Junior Flight Director" was added to fill a few extra shifts. These were similar to interim Flight Directors as they were mostly to fill spaces in the schedules, but were planned. The Junior Flight Directors for that mission (Zola Magwood and Jane MacLeod) each took one night shift.
Interim Flight Director
Interim Flight Directors are Mission Control staff who assume command of MC in the absence of a scheduled Flight Director. They can be surprisingly effective at commanding MC and will often become full Flight Directors in subsequent years.

Naue2000:

The motto of the mission, Nothing goes in or out, represents all that Spacesim is about: mission integrity, realism of simulation, and suspension of disbelief. Simply put, the astronauts must believe they are on another planet or moon in the solar system, and receive no external inputs from the real world. Most importantly, nothing may enter or exit the simulation room throughout the mission for any reason barring a real-life emergency. To a lesser extent, this represents the need that the astronauts forget their real lives for a few days, unplug from the Internet and society, and receive all their information exclusively through Mission Control.

Historical Breaks from The Golden Rule
During several missions, The Golden Rule was broken, and allowed Spacesim exactly why it was in place. During several missions, class notes were passed through the Powerbox in order to allow astronauts to remain up to date on their class work. Unfortunately, this break from Mission Integrity diminished the effects of the simulation by providing a link between Earth and the Habitat despite the Habitat being several thousand kilometers away.

An even worse break from the Golden Rule was the transference of an X-Box through the Power Box into the Habitat. This essentially ruined the mission by the same method described above, and by sapping attention away from the mission and towards video-games.

During the 2004-05 mission to Mars, astronauts Jonathan Scothorn and Stefan De Young went on an extended 6+ hour EVA in order to attend Senior Music Night at Lisgar Collegiate Institute. Both violinists, they were members of the Lisgar Senior Orchestra and String Ensemble. This breaking of the golden rule is sometimes excused by the fact that both Scothorn and De Young were only added to the roster of astronauts one week prior to the mission, and had no time to negotiate with Mrs. Bradley or Mr. Arrigo.

Creative Interpretations
The Golden Rule was broken in the past to provide supplies to the Habitat, that the Astronauts seemed to feel they could not do without. However, as was shown during the 2006-07 mission to Borrelly, supplies can obtained without the breaking of Mission Integrity. In essence, the plan was to incorporate the breaking of the Rule into the Mission itself, and to delay the instant gratification factor that the Power Box provided. To that end, the Astronauts sent a list of necessary supplies to Mission Control, which they promised to obtain and send by super-fast rocket towards Borrelly. At the end of the day, a small rubbermaid container was placed on the surface, while the Habitat shook from the "impact." An EVA was conducted to retrieve the payload thus obtaining the necessary supplies while preserving mission integrity. Other solutions, such as the transference of a sixth helmet to the habitat by Earth Station 1 during Dragan 2011, can be excused early in the mission by hiding the helmet in a part of the habitat that the crew has probably not yet ventured to. In that mission, which launched with only 5 helmets due to a mix-up immediately after pre-flight wherein someone removed a helmet from the airlock, the helmet was placed under a pile of EVA suits by a simulator sometime after takeoff and the astronauts were told to make sure that they only had 5 helmets by rooting around in the airlock. Because the habitat and mission control had a plausible explanation as to why the astronauts did not notice the helmet before, the Golden Rule was maintained and the problem was solved. The golden rule was also nearly broken on this mission when the astronauts needed to vent their waste water but had only one waste water container available. This was a problem since, to realistically simulate venting of waste, the bottle and the water would have to be removed. Averting the disaster Acting Flight Director Euan Wheaton advised the astronauts to make use of on of the Water Bottle Preservation Units (more commonly referred to as stools) sitting in the kitchen.
The Ottawa incarnation of Spacesim, from which the OCESS is decended, has existed for over 20 years, but unfortunately, there are many blanks in the current knowledge of Spacesim's history due to lack of record-keeping. The creation of the Spacesim Wiki was in part motivated by a desire to fill in these blanks. If you know particular details about a specific year or mission please add to the article.

Habitat Tours (henceforth referred to a Hab Tours) are, perhaps, once of the first and most influential experiences in a career at OCESS, however I believe that they can be an important tool for attracting new members. It is important, however, that we recognize the difference between tours for students and those for adults (ie. the media, board officials etc.). Therefore, I propose that Hab tours be formalized, organized and classified with the needs of different audiences in mind.

General Guidelines for all tours

Though tours must be modified for individual audiences, I propose that the general itinerary for most tours would be somewhat like this:

(0. The Office) * if tour is starting from Lisgar
MC and Keplernicus
Mezzanine
Habitat
longhouse
interlock
Command and control
Hot lab
(Bathroom) *the tourees need not necessarily go in
airlock
(Planetary surface) *depending on its presentability

These tours should include the functions of all these areas as well as:
the role of Simulators, Astronauts and MC
Alpha, Beta and Gamma
the roles of different OCESS executives
future mission plans

Classification of Tours

As mentioned above there are two major categories of tourees: students and adults. Both categories have specific needs to which a tour must be tailored.

Students:
(10 - 20 min. approx.)
Tours for students vary from case to case but these, in general, can afford to be slightly less formal than tours for adults.

Prospective/New members
These tours will act not only as an introduction to OCESS but also, in the case of prospective members, as a way of convincing them to join the club. As such tour guides should focus on making the club seem as attractive and friendly as possible. These tours should not be overly formal, as this might intimidate newcomers, but also not unprofessional, as this would give newcomers the wrong idea about OCESS. For example, a tour guide might mention the names of the bunk beds or the story of how Peter melted his boots but not the creative alternate name for our water pump. Tour guides should also take this as a chance to introduce new members to others as they go along the tour. For example, “This is Ian our Mission Commander.” or “This is Samuel our Education Commander.”

Visiting Alumni

This is a special case as alumni will already know about OCESS. When touring alumni one should skip the conventional OCESS information and focus on new projects. For example a tour guide might mentions new features of he Hab such as the sliding chairs or LAURA.

Adults:
(15 - 30 min. approx.)
Tours for adults should always be conducted in a more formal and detached manner than those for students. This is not to say that they should be boring or be conducted without enthusiasm, but tour guides should keep their audience in mind as always. Adults must be treated with extra reverence since, often, they are persons who are in a position to, shall we say, modify OCESS’s money and/or privileges (ie. school board officials, local politicians and other such visiting dignitaries). With this in mind, tour guides should try and highlight OCESS’s educational benefits (ie. learning chemistry in hot lab, learning physics in flight, EEPS etc). Humour is encouraged since it adds to the tourees enjoyment and puts them in a good mood but, for adult audiences, the humour should not be excessive, puerile or lewd. Try and keep it observational, for example when showing tourees the EVA suits complain about how uncomfortable they are. Also, when touring adults (though ideally this should be done for most tours) try and make sure the Hab is presentable. It makes a good impression.

Tours for 2010-11

In regards to tours this year (especially my newly proposed tours for prospective members) I propose that brief training sessions be held for those interested in conducting tours. I also propose that sign-up sheets for prospective member tours (henceforth PMT’s) be placed on the front of both the main and OCESS offices. in addition Hab tours should be advertised at club’s day. Tours should meet in front of the OCESS office at 3 PM. People who haven’t signed up should, of course, be perfectly welcome to come along but tours should not wait for random people if they aren’t signed up. How long signed up people are waited for should be at the discretion of the tour guides, but waiting past 3:20 is getting excessive. Also, there should be two tour guides for the walk to 440 so that one can go on the bus, with those who can, and one can walk. Do not leave first timers to find their own way to 440.

1.9 MC-LOGS Procedures
1.9.1 Job Description
LOGS must record, with timestamp, all interesting occurances during the mission, especially those pertaining to Mission Control and plans to control the mission.

Because there is often a chatlog from AUXCOM, LOGS is not required to contain all the details of the current situation, and should be considered a minute by minute summary.

1.9.2 Log Worthy Events
This list is not exhaustive:
*Launch
*Engine Burn
*Docking
*Depressurization
*Permissions given by Mission Control
*Requests from the Habitat
*Shift change outside of normal procedure

1.9.3 Unworthy Events
This list is not exhaustive:
*Any events relating to Time Acceleration - Note: Time Acceleration should be noted in the Unofficial Logs in accordance with Unofficial Logs procedures.

1.9.4 LOG Header
The top of each log file should contain the following template, filled out appropriately by the first person to man LOGS.

Earth Date (E.g. March 26, 2010)
Mission Type (Mini, Training, Main)
Mission Name (Alpha, Revenge, Coronis, etc.)

Destination: Mission Destination
Purpose: 1. Mission Goal #1
2. Mission Goal #2
3. Mission Goal #3 (see: associated documentation)
MCCom: Mission Control Commander's full name
HabCom: Habitat Commander's full name
SubCom: Habitat Sub-Commander's full name
Astros: Other astronauts. Full names.

Note that the Simulator Commander's full name should be appended to the LOG on a line indicated by "SimCom:" after the mission is completed. This delay is to preserve mission integrity.

1.9.5 Stations Check
Mission Control Check
It is the responsibility of MC LOGS to remind the Flight Director at 20 minute intervals to verify that each station in Mission Control is manned by an appropriate staff member, and that all stations report green.

Example MC Shift Monitoring
2013 - LOGS reminds FLIGHT to perform station check.
Position Name Status
FLIGHT Ramclam Green
CAPCOM Storey Green
AUXCOM stand-by stand-by
EECOM Pelletier Red
GUIDO Pelletier Green
ENG De Young Orange
LOGS De Young Green

FLIGHT Sign-off: Issues same as previous check.

*Position:
**As shown.
*Name:
**The surname of the Mission Controller responsible for that station, including duplicates.
*Status:
**Either Green, Orange, Red, or Stand-by
***Green: All is well
***Orange: Minor malfunction or concern. (E.g. ln1 is grey on the Power Grid because the astronauts turned it off)
***Red: A major malfunction has occured. (E.g. The Hotlab has no interior air pressure, and this issue has not yet been resolved.)
***Stand-by: This station is not being monitored, or is not able to report their status.

Habitat Check
It is the responsibility of MC LOGS to remind the Flight Director at 30 minute intervals to verify that all stations in the Habitat are manned by an appropriate Astronaut. In addition, during this check, each piece of software should be tested to ensure that Mission Control is receiving the correct telemetry from the Habitat. Testing the software consists of verifying that all software reads the same time as all the software in the habitat with accounting for the 5s lag in updates.

1.9.6 Logging Best Practices
At the start of a new day on Earth, the log should read

End of DAY X
Start of DAY Y

Timestamps should be in HHMM corresponding to a 24-hour clock. This means that 8:32 pm would be logged as 2032.

Following the timestamp should be a space, dash, and space.

The Logger should identify himself upon taking over logs and upon ceding logs to the next logger.

Record the launch and landing times as exactly as possible, to the second.

Start the log entry with the person who is performing the action and not the person who is receiving. I.e. if the Habitat asks for permission, the log entry starts with "Habitat asks," and if MC grants it, that entry starts with "MC grants" and not "Habitat is granted"

Example Log
Start of DAY 1
...
1230 - Ms. Alice on MC LOGS
1232 - Habitat requests permission to Launch
1233 - MC grants permission to Launch
1235 - SRBs engaged
1236 - Hab at 300km from Earth
1237 - SRBs disengaged
1237 - Hab Engines at 100% in ccwPrograde
1238 - Astronauts report loud impacts on C&C roof
1239 - Hab Engines at 0%
1240 - ENG reports RAD shields malfunctioning
1241 - EECOM reports decompression in C&C
1243 - EECOM reports internal radiation at 4.23E-09 S/s and climbing
1244 - Astronauts evacuated to Interlock
1246 - CAPCOM reports loss of communication
...
1313 - Ms. Alice cedes MC LOGS
1314 - Mr. Bob on MC LOGS

1.9.7 Unofficial Logs
It is also the job of LOGS to record unofficial occurrences in the unofficial logs. This includes such things as unprofessional behaviour that is particularly amusing, events relating to time acceleration, or anything noteworthy that in some way impinges on Mission Integrity.
LOGS is charged with recording all material of substance regarding the Mission with timestamps. Such interesting material includes launch, engine burn, requests for permissions from the Habitat, permissions granted by Mission Control, etc.

LOGS is also charged with reminding the Flight Director to periodically recheck, in full, the status of his Mission Control and of the Habitat's workers and status.
Unofficial Logs
It is also the job of LOGS to record unofficial occurrences in the Unofficial Logs.

Other Duties
LOGS can be required to monitor the Power Grid in addition to her LOGS duties, in accordance with Mission Control Staffing Procedures.

Although this is not part of the LOGS job description, it is anticipated that LOGS may run BIOCOM in addition to LOGS as BIOCOM does not require constant attention and is proposed to be run on the same computer as the logs.
2010 Proposal to Change the Hierarchy

Naue2000:

The 2010 Proposal to Change the Hierarchy was designed by a coalition of members in order to replace the confusing and redundant hierarchy in place in 2009-10. On April 12, 2010, everyone in the Spacesim Office who was not willing to work on hierarchy was ordered out for a period of 20 minutes during which Samuel Baltz, Ben Paul, Matthew Pelletier, Arrian Amir-Rafiei, and Bryce Storey drafted a new Spacesim hierarchy. For a period of about a week following April 12, Samuel Baltz bothered every member and alumnus he could find for their opinion on the proposal, and found that the coalition's efforts were almost uniformly approved of.

New Hierarchy
The proposal would have the hierarchy arranged under the following rank categories:
1. Teacher Advisor
2. Commander
3. SubCommander
4. Lieutenant
5. SubLieutenant

Explanation of the Ranks
NPOV
1. The Teacher Advisor position will remain unchanged. This person has absolute power and veto over everything.
2. Commander: These two will check each others' power to ensure that no one person will be making decisions alone. They do not have complete authority over any one area of the club; rather, they are labelled "Mission" and "Education" as job descriptions. Commander positions will preferentially go to grade twelves, and the holders are executives.
3. SubCommander: Subcommander positions will preferentially go to grade elevens or twelves, and the holders are executives.
4. Lieutenant: These positions will preferentially go to grade elevens, and the holders are executives.
5. SubLieutenant: SubLieutenants do not count as executives, unlike every other category. These positions are mainly cleaning and organizing and should preferentially go to grade tens, or to responsible grade nines partway through the year.
Explanation of the Roles
NPOV
Mission Commander: the same as in the 2009-10 Hierarchy; this person will serve as Habitat Commander on the mission and will be in charge of determining everything that will happen on the mission.

Education Commander: this person mainly does training for, schedules, and is in charge of EEPs and Planetariums.

Deputy Mission Commander: the same as Subcommander in the current hierarchy; they will serve as Mission-Specific Lt. Cmdr. This person is basically a general aide to the Mission Commander.

External Affairs SubCommander: The PR Director, back from the dead. This person will, in consultation with both Commanders and the Teacher Advisor, act as board liasion, get funding for spacesim, and, if the education commander wishes, will contact elementary schools for EEPs and Planetariums.

EEPs SubCommander: This person will be the backup for EEPs. They will know the EEPs procedures inside and out, will go to all of the EEPs with the Education Commander, and will be ready in case the Education Commander is deathly ill and cannot make it to a scheduled EEPs. Ideally they will also be able to do Planetariums.

Planetarium SubCommander: The same as EEPs but for Planetariums.

Director of Web and Archives: Webmaster for short, this is the same as the current position in the hierarchy. This person is in charge of all of Spacesim's ancient documents, and in charge of maintaining and adding to the website. The Wikimaster answers directly to the Webmaster.

Tech Director: The same as Engineering Commander in the current hierarchy, this member is listed basically as recognition that they know a lot about electronics. They will tell you why you shouldn't plug just any card straight into a computer.

Office Director: Also back from the dead, this position is for cleaning and organizing the office. The holder of this position does not have the full authority to throw people out of the office, but will count as a senior member for the purposes of staying in the office. They also get to be alone in the office during designated cleaning periods (suggested: half an hour after school on Fridays when everyone is going to the work session anyways).

Quartermaster: This member is in charge of cleaning and organizing the storage module.

Wikimaster: This member is in charge of cleaning and organizing this website, the Spacesim Wiki.

Criticism
The reaction to this proposal was overwhelmingly positive, with the following concerns raised:
*Perhaps too many positions to fill every year
*EEPs SubCommander and Planetarium SubCommander are redundant ranks
The proposal was voted apon at the lunch meeting on April 16, 2010. The vote was unanimous, with all present in favor of adopting the new system. This new system will be used in 2010-11.
*Some believed the rank of "Office Director" should be renamed "Office Master" to fit in with the other SubLieutenant positions
Next Steps
Following the adoption of the 2010 Proposal to Change the Hierarchy, it is necessary to commission a study of the following items in order to ensure the Proposal's integration into Spacesim:

* Further identifying the individual roles of each of the positions in order to provide clarity of purpose to all applicants
* Development of templates for the Position Application Forms
* Canvasing of members to locate potential candidates for each position
* Selection of members to fill all positions prior to May 21
* Current organisation administrators must train their replacements prior to the end of the school year

Mission Purpose
The primary purpose of this mission was to test if life exists, could exist, or has existed on Titan. This was carried out by first testing for the presence of various organic compounds needed for life, and/or exclusively produced as a byproduct of life (see "proposed experiments"), and ultimately testing for signs of life on Titan.

Proposed Experiments
Mission Prometheus Experiments
Another experiment that was proposed (although the astronauts planned to bypass it with a granola bar cartel) was to have the astronauts become self-sufficient by growing their own duck weed from their grey water, and live off that for the last half of the mission.

Data on Titan
Titan
Titan is one of the moons orbiting Saturn. It is fairly large for a moon, and is comparable in size to some of the inner terrestrial planets. it's atmosphere is composed mostly of N2 gas. What really interested the scientists, and our astronauts is Titan's mantle. It is widely accepted that Titan has a mantle not of molten rock, but of liquid water - one of the most vital elements needed for life.

Mission Results
We have life!

The experiments for the mission have been concluded, and alhough a formal report is still being generated, the Payload Specialist has been able to draw many conclusions about the prospects of life on Titan. We have been able to confirm the presence of nitrates, ammoniates, carbohydrates (sugars) and lipids (fats) on the surface of Titan. The presence of these complex organic molecules points towards the existance of life. Further evidence was obtained when sealed samples of liquid from Titan fermented and produced copious ammounts of alcohol. This behavior was observed in several samples, and rules out any possibility of this being an isolated case of contamination.

Ottawa Tech is short for Ottawa Technical High School and is the current location of Space Simulation. Located at 440 Albert Street, the facility served as a high school offering vocational and trade related courses throughout the 50s and 60s. It was finally closed in 1992 due to declining enrollment and the decreasing demand for tradesmen. The school is still maintained by OCDSB and is used partly as a daycare, storage facility, and most importantly, a residence for the OCESS. Despite the property being valued at $10 million, the school board plans to hold onto the building, hoping to re-open the high school at a later time. Thus, the future of Spacesim's home is secure for the moment.

OCESS moved into Ottawa Tech in 1993, but was forced to leave in 1998 due to the fact that the OCDSB was preparing to sell the school. It was allowed back in 2001 after the closing of their Media Centre facilities.

Ottawa Tech graciously allowed the OCESS to make use of their auto garage, which was transformed into our location for many years. Ottawa Tech is where OCESS housed its Mission Control, Habitat, planetary surface and Simulators stations; as well as being the location for EEPs.

Currently, the organization is being moved to another room where a new Habitat will be built, with Mission Control perhaps being moved to none other than the Sim Office at Lisgar. This may postpone the Mission until after the usual date. At the end of November (2008) the construction of the New Habitat and deconstruction of the old Habitat began.
